Control data, Sankey diagrams, and exergy: Assessing the resource efficiency of industrial plants
The authors present a single metric for resource efficiency using exergy, measuring both energy and materials. Using control data within industrial plants at a batch level they demonstrate unique insights into system level performance and efficiency improvement opportunities by using this metric. Using Sankey diagrams as the primary method of visualisation for batch level exergy within the system they are able to visibly show inefficiencies and losses. The future application of this metric within industry could enable decision makers to benefit from significant material and energy efficiency improvements.
