From 24th August – 4th September, Refficiency group leader Professor Jonathan Cullen went to China on a research trip.

Firstly, Jonathan attended the Joint ISIE Socio-Economic Metabolism (SEM) and Asia-Pacific (AP) Conference from 25th – 27th August in Beijing.

This conference addressed critical issues in industrial ecology and socioeconomic metabolism, such as the built environment, urban sustainability, circular economy and policy, industrial sustainability, value and supply chains, AI and digitalization, energy transitions, and more. Pictured below is Jonathan taking part in a roundtable discussion on ‘Industrial Ecology: Policy and Industry in Action’. This was chaired by Dr Fanran Meng, Associate Professor in Sustainable Chemical Engineering at the University of Sheffield and former Research Associate in the Resource Efficiency Collective.

Jonathan also gave a presentation on the Re-evaluation of End-of-life Treatment Options for Plastics.

On the 27th August, Jonathan attended a China-UK Workshop on Battery Carbon Footprint and Resource Supply Chain Risks hosted at Tsinghua University. Jonathan gave a talk on Critical Material Supply Chain Mapping.

Jonathan lectured on Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Materials at Beijing Normal University, below he is pictured with attendees as well as PhD student in Refficiency, Luke Cullen.

Jonathan then travelled to Xuzhou, where he gave lectures at China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT). Below he is pictured with Associate Professor Yaning Qiao to his left, and students of CUMT.

Pictured below is Professor Lu Sun from Xi’an Jiaotong University (on the right of Jonathan), Prof Lu Sun’s PhD students and masters students from Yanan University and Dr Fanran Meng.

Some of the other (non-academic) highlights included visiting the Terracotta Army in Xi’An, eating delicious food and the beautiful Chinese architecture.
