How resource-efficient is the global steel industry?
Steel production is responsible for a quarter of industrial GHG emissions and will require both material and energy efficiency strategies to deliver emissions reductions. Ana attempts to quantify the potential savings in the global steel sector by combining material and energy flow data into a single exergy metric. The data are provided by the WorldSteel Association and contains a comprehensive overview of resource flows through the three main steel production routes. Resource efficiency is calculated for both the plants and the different routes within them. Savings for material and energy are then quantified at the global level.
